The Board of Directors of Canopy Realtor® Association and Canopy MLS, unanimously voted last week to donate $200,000 each, for a total of $400,000 in funds to support Haywood County flood relief efforts.

“We care deeply about the people and communities that we serve and now more than ever our neighbors who have lost their homes and so much more need our assistance,” said David Kennedy, Canopy Realtor® Association/Canopy MLS president.

Kennedy said reports from local leadership and Realtor® members in the western region about the devastation is not only heart wrenching, but is a call to assist.

Seventy-five percent, amounting to $300,000 in funding, will be allocated to the United Way of Haywood County, and the remaining 25{49352ce17ba8b8c977b46090d4022735cbbf9c8d2a96e7181f87be9b36a1fd69}, amounting to $100,000, will be donated to Mountain Projects, for a grand total of $400,000.

“I am simply overcome and filled with gratitude for the overwhelming support from our industry,” said Brian Cagle, a Canopy MLS and Canopy Foundation board of directors member and vice President/Managing Broker of Beverly-Hanks & Associates.

“We sincerely appreciate this generous donation,” said Celesa Willett, executive director of United Way of Haywood County. “This this gift will meet the immediate need to help people get back into their homes.”

Willett said all $400,000 of the Canopy MLS and Canopy Foundation donation that was divided between United Way and Mountain Projects, will be dedicated to addressing the urgent needs of housing, and especially to rehabilitate flooded homes.

“This will help with 20 houses. When you get a call like that, it really hits you,” Willett said upon learning of the donation. “The fact they have confidence in United Way to make it work is very humbling. We’re here for the long haul.”

Baptists on Mission are on the ground in Haywood and have partnered with the state’s Emergency Management Division to make flooded homes livable, something that costs $17,500 per home.

Once the immediate need it met overall, the group returns to the homes to complete tasks such as installing flooring and painting.
